Gene Therapy

The method involves injecting a modified virus directly into a patient's chest cavity and treating the patient with an anti-viral drug that has proven effective at killing cancer cells. The procedure tries to make the cancer cells susceptible to the virus so they can be killed without killing healthy cells. The University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center has been awarded a grant from the National Cancer Institute to fund a gene therapy trial. There is also a clinical trial of a slightly different gene therapy at the Louisiana State University Medical Center.
