Asbestos was used in automobile brakes for several decades. The grinding of brake shoes during installation would create high levels of asbestos dust. Further, dust would accumulate in the brake drum area and become air borne during the replacement of old brake shoes with new shoes. Often brake drums were cleaned with air hoses, releasing millions of asbestos fibers in the air. Some brake shoes, even today, contain asbestos. These means of inhaling asbestos particulate have lead to numerous cases of severe lung disease, to include lung cancer, asbestosis, and mesothelioma.   • Inspect and lubricate engines and parts during routine service.

  • Follow checklist of potential brake trouble spots.

  • Get descriptions of cars' symptoms from customers or service estimators.

  • Estimate brake repair costs and obtain customer approval to make brake repairs.

  • Examine cars, using a systematic approach to diagnose problems. May also test drive cars.

  • Adjust, repair, rebuild, or replace damaged or poorly working brake parts or units.

  • Use power tools, machine tools, and hand tools.

  • Physical Work Conditions:

  • May work indoors or outdoors, but more often work indoors.

  • Sometimes wear protective gear, such as goggles or earplugs.

  • Are sometimes exposed to contaminants, such as antifreeze, chemical degreasers, and possible asbestos particulate which can lead to lung disease.

  • Are sometimes exposed to hazardous equipment. There is a slight possibility of moderate injury.

  • Are sometimes exposed to sounds and noise levels that are distracting and uncomfortable.

  • Sometimes wear a special uniform.

  • Are sometimes exposed to hazardous situations that result in cuts, bruises, or minor burns. There is a slight possibility of minor injury.

  • Sometimes work in cramped work spaces that require getting into awkward positions.

  • Are sometimes exposed to inadequate lighting conditions.
